As an enabler for Singapore’s manufacturing industry, 3D printing possess exciting prospects of driving a new growth industry for Singapore, increasing productivity and creating improved and new products for users. The Nanyang Technological University (NTU) is a major player in Singapore’s 3D Printing ecosystem, providing innovative solutions and training up a relevant future-ready workforce for Singapore’s industries. The impact of 3D printing on Singapore’s manufacturing landscape and future will be discussed during this session.

In early 2012, as the world experienced an unprecedented boom in the accessibility of consumer 3D printing technology, a product development team in the field of humanitarian Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) partnered with faculty from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) to develop an idea that would change the state of art in the EOD field. From this was borne the Advanced Ordnance Training Materials (AOTM) program, funded by the U.S. Department of State. The technical team faced numerous challenges, including the technical limitations of consumer-grade 3D printers and current models for scaling production, which resulted in the creation of Cambodia’s first 3D printing micro-factory. The challenges and opportunities associated with deploying consumer-grade 3D printers as a primary means of manufacturing in the development context will be discussed using illustrations from the AOTM program.

The Impact of 3D Printing Technology on the Future of the Manufacturing Sector
Although 3D printing, also known as Additive Manufacturing, has been around for nearly three decades, its influence has only recently started to spread beyond rapid prototyping to penetrate the traditional manufacturing domain. This presentation will examine the potential impact that 3D printing technology could have on the manufacturing sector worldwide, with a particular focus on machinery production. Global Strategies for Intellectual Property Protection in Additive Manufacturing
Additive manufacturing has created both a technical and social revolution that presents unique challenges for intellectual property (IP) protection. A thorough understanding of how to address IP in the additive manufacturing context is important to avoid common pitfalls. This talk will center on global strategies for protection under the Patent Cooperation Treaty, Berne Convention on copyrights, the Hague System for the International Registration of Industrial Designs and anti-counterfeit laws, for example. Common forms of IP protection, a discussion of expired patents and technical trends is also included.
